My big boy is one year old today!

Marlo grew up into beautiful dog. Incredibly affectionate, showing no signs of aggression, drawing huge smiles from passers by where ever we go. Still a baby, he can play all day long and never get tired. Last 9 months, since he is with us, have been nothing but joy.

While playing with Marlo on the Eastern Beach yesterday, awesome rainbow came up. We’re not short of the rainbows here in Auckland but this one was special.

Marlo is now 8 months old and weighs 48kg. He grew into beautiful, clever and very affectionate boy. Here he is about a month ago, resting in a shade after a long walk at Musick Point.

Since yesterday we have a new family member!

Marlo at home 1

Look ma! I'm home!

Marlo is unbelievably handsome rottweiler puppy. He is 11 weeks old tomorrow, born on 23rd March. Marlo’s mum Chaos had her first litter of 10 phenomenal pups and Marlo is the largest one – today vet measured him at 10.4 kg.

He also got his second vaccine today and was microchiped. Final vaccine is due in three weeks, then after two more weeks Marlo can finally go to public places safely.

I can’t wait for the first walk to beach – have a feeling that he’s going to love ocean. At the moment he scares only on very loud noises. Gets very attentive when he hears other dogs from neighborhood barking, takes a stand, starts growling and lets surprisingly deep bark.  Very funny to watch.

Potty training is going slowly but he got used to his temporary bed from the get go – spent all night in it sleeping. Enters bath tub without any hesitation and doesn’t mind being showered at all.

Tomorrow registration with Auckland City Council, then we are going to look at puppy obedience training schools.

Welcome Marlo!

Never rushed, never phased. Always around to accept the pass from teammate in trouble, always able to pick the best possible move and best possible, sometimes impossible, pass.

For seventeen years he made everyone around him look good, sometimes way better than they actually were.

From this Liverpool supporter only admiration and huge respect.

Really, it’s just too fucking hard.

My DVD set Treme, season 1 arrived on Monday and I finished watching all 10 episodes yesterday.

What can I say? David Simon is in a habit of creating powerful television and his is stuff is pretty much the only thing I can watch.

The reason for this are not beautiful story lines and superb acting alone. It’s the fact that his stories are about the people “from around the way”, their struggle to keep shit going regardless of all the obstacles forced upon them, told without even a hint of pathetic. It’s like watching real life.

And it doesn’t matter whether it’s the kid from Baltimore ghetto corner or brilliant jazz trombone player from New Orleans – you can always identify with the character, and you keep watching, hoping that everything will be fine in the end. Then you start crying even before it finishes because you just know the life is not like that.

Treme soundtrack is out of this world, real stuff that comes from truly great town like New Orleans always was and always will be.

Couldn’t sleep last night and went on YouTube spree. Don’t know exactly how but Postcards from Paraguay appeared in the side bar. Clicked it and, like always, was blown away by beautiful melody that only Knopfler can create.

Ended up downloading all my favorites from the old days and now have couple of CDs of total awesomeness.

Had also to record them to tape !?!?! because I don’t have a CD player in my car.

Listening all day, truly incredible music. It brought back lot of memories and made me happy.

This shot was taken on Wednesday evening by some lucky people:

Killer whales in Half Moon Bay

Spot is very close to where my boat is moored.

Apparently on Thursday they swam past Eastern Bays just 15-20m off shore. Later on Thursday they were spotted just off the wharf at Hilton, then went under the Harbour Bridge into Waitemata. Stayed a bit in Birkenhead and later reported to chase the fish around Pt Chevalier.

This pod had 8 whales, two of them calves. Researchers are sure that orcas visit Auckland often chasing their favourite food – sting rays, which Auckland coastal waters are full of.

I hope to see them close up some time.
